Written for the album Bow Project 2: Bowscapes, in memory of Jürgen Bräuninger

Programme note

Montage takes as its starting point an ostinato figure that features in some of Mantombi Matotiyana’s Umrhubhe bow music. I’ve utilized both this figure (and its major 2nd pitch configuration) as well as field recordings of a wedding celebration, wind chimes and other sounds, to create a short audio collage (or montage) that cycles through various musical ‘scenes’. Montage is written in memory of my former teacher Jürgen Bräuninger, in response to his concept of the ‘bowscape’.

The Conversation

“Phungula’s track Montage layers and contrasts the isolation of studio electronic composing with “an element that contained a multitude of sounds” – a family wedding recording he had made some years earlier. It invokes the spirit of community music-making in which bow traditions are rooted.” - Gwen Ansell
